Unusual Houses of the World – Olympic Stadium “Fisht”

With just minutes left before the start of opening ceremony of Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, what else can we possibly talk about? Main arena of Sochi 2014 – Olympic Stadium "Fisht"

Named after Mount Fisht and located within walking distance from the Olympic Village, Fisht Olympic Stadium was built in the new Sochi Olympic Park.
It can host up to 40,000 spectators. The roof of the building resembles snow covered Caucasus Mountains. Stadium will provide a seaside setting for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
Construction Stage

The stadium was designed by global leaders of sports architecture Populous and UK design consultant Buro Happold.
The roof was built by Vector Foiltec.

There was two types of foil used in the construction of the roof. Translucent foil helps to bring the feeling of the outdoors inside the stadium. And more opaque foil disperses direct sunlight providing comfort for the spectators. While at night time, the use of LED lighting creates a spectacular display.

The cost of construction was about $603.5 million. After the Games, the stadium complex will serve as a training centre and match venue for the Russian national soccer team. The Fisht stadium is one of the 11 arenas chosen to host matches in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The opening ceremony of the 22nd Winter Olympics will take place on Friday – exactly 2,410 days after Sochi won the bid to host the Games at precisely 20:14 local time.
